Chapter Nine
We spent hours sitting around in that dimly lit bar, catching up on each other’s lives. No matter how lost I got in the conversation, Alex’s touch on my thigh, cheek, or exposed back never failed to make my skin flare to life with goosebumps. I would be talking to Suzie while Alex was engrossed in whatever Paul was saying, but he never once allowed any distance to get between us. I cherished it.
“Look at you two, all cute and loved up. Not giving a single care in the world to ask us about our big day or even demanding to see more pictures of our wedding on the beach yet,” Suzie grumbled with a smile on her face. “Anyone would think you'd been preoccupied.”
My eyes lit up instantly, and Alex leaned farther over the table. “Are you kidding me?” he practically roared at Suzie. “I asked Paul for pictures fucking weeks ago. He said something about you two keeping that day as,” he paused to lift his hands up before using his fingers for air quotes, “sacred as possible.”
“You photo-blocked them?” Her mouth hung limply before she turned to her husband.
“Nope,” Paul croaked, half swallowing his drink while trying to get his words out. “I photo-blocked him.” He pointed at Alex. “Let’s not forget that when we got married, these two here hadn’t hooked back up yet. He was still the depressed, brooding man with a broken heart and a chip on his shoulder the size of a fucking beast.”
I guess we could rely on Paul to call a spade a spade, no matter who he was around. My legs tensed beneath the table, and my hand slid over Alex’s thigh soothingly, squeezing him to let him know I would deal with this.
“Well, he isn’t depressed, brooding, or living with a broken heart now, you guys, so we’d both really like to see them. In fact,” I eyed Alex carefully with a smirk on my face, “we’re a little bit hurt you two didn’t want us, your supposed best friends, there for your big day. You know… the real one.”
“Oh,” Paul gasped, his mouth exaggerating his expression as he clasped his hands to his cheeks. “She’s a witch—a real life witch. See, Suzie, I always told you there was a demon behind that angelic smile of hers. So manipulative.” Paul dropped his hands on the table and laughed. “Natalie Vincent, I do believe you just tried to make us feel guilty without just cause.”
“Guilty as charged.” I beamed back at him. “What can I say? I get protective of my man.”
Alex leaned back, his face unashamedly displaying how good he felt when I called him my man. His arm fell around my shoulders before he tilted his head to one side and raised a brow at Paul. “Her man,” he mouthed. “Did you hear that, Harris?”
“I heard it and I choked on its sickly sweetness.” He grinned, picking up his drink and knocking the remainder of his beer back in one gulp.
